Saturday Pancakes by the Pond

Placeholder of a homestead kitchen table

Saturday does not begin with an alarm at our house. It begins with the kettle, a bowl of batter, and whoever wakes first claiming the wooden spoon.

We keep the recipe simple: flour, milk, eggs, a spoon of honey, and a little patience. The children take turns flipping, and the first pancake is always a little odd, which is part of the charm.

When the stack is tall enough, we wrap it in a towel and walk down to the pond. The water is usually still at that hour. Ducks paddle in a line. Someone always forgets the forks and nobody minds.

This is the kind of morning we want this site to remember: G-rated, unhurried, and shared. If you try it, pack extra butter and leave the phones in the kitchen.
