Teaching the Kids to Garden
Our garden is not tidy. It is a patchwork of short rows labeled with popsicle sticks, and that is exactly how we like it.
Each child gets a strip of soil and a job that fits their height. One waters. One pulls the obvious weeds. One talks to the tomato plants as if they were cousins visiting from town.
We plant starts we can see: lettuce, beans, sunflowers, and a few herbs for the kitchen window. Watching something grow is the whole lesson. Math happens when we count leaves. Science happens when a worm appears.
If a row fails, we plant again. Homestead living with children is less about perfect harvests and more about coming back to the same patch of earth together.
